A tank of gas from Midland puts you in sand dunes, a spring-fed pool, a mountain range or some of the darkest skies in the lower 48. Here are the day trips Midlanders take, sorted by drive time. Drive times are one way and approximate.
Under an Hour
Monahans Sandhills State Park is about 52 miles west on I-20, roughly 55 minutes. The park covers 3,840 acres of active, wind-shaped dunes with no marked trails, so you walk wherever you like. Renting a sand disc at park headquarters and sledding the dunes is the main reason people go. The park fills up on busy days, so check the state park site for day-pass availability before you drive.
Odessa is 20 to 30 minutes west and works as a cluster of small stops. The Stonehenge replica on the UT Permian Basin campus is outdoors and free to visit. The Ellen Noël Art Museum reopened in December 2025 after a renovation, with its restored Tom Lea mural back on view. The eight-foot Jack Ben Rabbit statue on North Sam Houston Avenue has stood since 1962.
About Two Hours
Fort Stockton is roughly 119 miles southwest. Historic Fort Stockton preserves an 1867 frontier post with an original guard house and reconstructed barracks, and the Annie Riggs Memorial Museum occupies a 13-room adobe hotel built in 1899. Paisano Pete, the 22-foot fiberglass roadrunner at Main and Dickinson, is the reason most people stop.
Lubbock is about 119 miles north and is the day trip with the most museums attached. The National Ranching Heritage Center at Texas Tech is a 19-acre outdoor park of relocated ranching structures dating from the 1780s to the 1950s. The Museum of Texas Tech University and Lubbock Lake Landmark, a preserve with roughly 12,000 years of human history, are nearby. The Buddy Holly Center downtown holds his Stratocaster and glasses, and the statue and West Texas Walk of Fame across the street are a different attraction from the Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts across town.
San Angelo is about 113 miles southeast. Fort Concho is one of the better-preserved frontier forts in the country, with 23 original and restored limestone buildings. San Angelo State Park has about 50 miles of trails, official state bison and longhorn herds, and a Dinosaur Trail past fossilized Permian trackways. Downtown has the Concho River Walk and painted fiberglass sheep scattered around town as part of the Sheep Spectacular art project.
Two and a Half to Three and a Half Hours
Balmorhea State Park is about 144 miles west and is the trip people ask about most. The San Solomon Springs pool is billed as the largest spring-fed swimming pool in the world, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and holding steady in the mid 70s year-round. Snorkeling is the draw. The park often reaches capacity on weekends, holidays and summer days, and the state park site strongly recommends buying a day pass online before you drive, since walk-up passes are only sold when the park has room.
Fort Davis sits near 5,000 feet, which is the real reason to go in summer. Fort Davis National Historic Site is about 176 miles away, with restored and refurnished buildings and a short film. Davis Mountains State Park next door has the CCC-built Skyline Drive, a well-known bird blind and a trail that connects directly to the fort. Indian Lodge, the white adobe lodge the CCC built inside the park, is open.
McDonald Observatory is about 186 miles away at 6,300 feet. The visitor center offers a solar viewing program, daytime tours of the research telescopes and evening Star Parties. The schedule varies by season, so book from the observatory calendar rather than guessing. In summer it is not dark enough to start a Star Party until close to 10 p.m., which makes for a very late drive home. Fall and winter Star Parties start earlier and work better as a same-day trip. Bring a jacket in any month.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico is roughly 195 miles north. It runs on Mountain Time, an hour behind Midland, and entry uses timed reservations through recreation.gov. Check the park site for which cave routes and ranger programs are running before you drive.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park is about 197 miles west, also on Mountain Time. The draw for most day-trippers is McKittrick Canyon, a spring-fed pocket inside the Chihuahuan Desert, with a fall color window that runs from late October into early November. There is no gas, food, lodging or store anywhere in the park, so fill up and pack lunch.
Marfa is about 198 miles southwest, roughly three and a half hours, and it is a Thursday-through-Sunday town. Many galleries and restaurants close early in the week, so choose the day first. Prada Marfa, the permanently locked storefront installed in 2005, is actually near Valentine and is free to visit at any hour, with no shade or facilities. The Marfa Lights Viewing Area sits nine miles east of town on US 90. The Chinati Foundation shows Donald Judd’s work, mostly by guided visit, and has announced a multi-year restoration of the Artillery Sheds that closes Judd’s 100 untitled works in mill aluminum after Chinati Weekend, October 9 to 11, 2026. Other parts of Chinati stay open, so check what is on view before you commit to the drive. The Hotel Paisano changed hands on July 1, 2026 and is in a phased renovation, so confirm what is open there before you plan a meal around it.
Alpine is about 171 miles away and is the more reliable weekday stop in that direction. The Museum of the Big Bend at Sul Ross State University doubled in size in 2023, and downtown has more than 25 murals you can walk to for free.
Marathon is roughly 165 miles out and is a half-day stop. The Gage Gardens behind the 1927 Gage Hotel are 26 acres and free to walk, and the skies there are about as dark as they get in the continental United States.
The One That Is Not a Day Trip
Big Bend National Park is about 232 miles to Panther Junction, four and a half hours each way. That is nine hours of driving for a park where the Chisos Basin alone takes three hours. Locals treat Big Bend as a two-night trip. Check the park conditions page first, since visitor centers, campgrounds and backcountry roads close seasonally and for repairs.
When to Go
Late September through November and March through May are the comfortable windows for nearly everything here. In July and August, Midland highs reach the upper 90s, and the dunes at Monahans and the roadside stops near Marfa have no shade. The summer workaround is elevation: Fort Davis, Alpine and Marathon all sit above 4,000 feet and cool off after sunset, and the Balmorhea pool stays in the mid 70s in any month.
Watch the day of the week. Many museums close Mondays, including the Buddy Holly Center and the Museum of Texas Tech, and Marfa works best Thursday through Sunday. Tuesday through Saturday is the window when most of the Permian Basin is open. Staying closer to home? Our things to do in Midland guide, the museums guide and the fall events guide cover what is happening in town.
